Applications

ApplicationRoleSignificance
Flame retardants Sb2O3 synergist with halogenated organics ~50% of global Sb demand. Required by UL flammability standards in plastics, textiles, electronics enclosures
Lead-acid batteries Sb hardener in Pb–Sb grid alloys Improves grid strength and casting in starter, deep-cycle, and stationary lead-acid batteries
Ammunition & defence Primer compositions, hardened lead shot, armour-piercing cores Critical for small-arms primers; on US DoD critical material list. Drove the December 2024 US-targeted export ban.
Photovoltaic glass Sb2O3 as a solar-glass clarifying agent Improves transmittance of cover glass for crystalline-silicon PV modules — the fastest-growing Sb segment
PET catalyst Sb2O3 polymerisation catalyst Standard catalyst for polyethylene terephthalate production (bottles, fibres)

Important Notes

US dual-use ban suspended, not lifted Article 2 of MOFCOM No. 46/2024 (the outright dual-use Sb ban targeting US end-users) is suspended until 28 November 2026 under Announcement No. 72/2025 [4]. The general Sb licensing regime under No. 33/2024 [2] remains fully active.
Defence stockpile pressure The US Defense Logistics Agency holds a small Sb stockpile and has issued multiple FY2024–2026 solicitations to rebuild it. Domestic production is restarting at Perpetua Resources’ Stibnite Gold project in Idaho but is not expected before 2028.
Tripled spot price Western Sb spot prices roughly tripled from mid-2024 to Q4 2025. Price-pass-through to flame-retardant compounders and PV-glass makers is incomplete, leaving margin pressure across multiple downstream industries.
