Applications

ApplicationRoleSignificance
MRI contrast agents Gd(III) chelates: gadopentetate, gadobutrol, gadoteridol ~30% of MRI exams worldwide use Gd-based contrast; FDA-approved agents include Magnevist, Gadavist, ProHance. Critical clinical workflow with no economic substitute.
NdFeB magnet additive Trace Gd substitution for Nd Improves temperature stability and corrosion resistance of permanent magnets at lower cost than Dy/Tb
Neutron shielding Gd2O3 in nuclear reactor control rods and fuel Highest thermal-neutron capture cross-section of any element (~49,000 barns); used as burnable poison
Magnetocaloric refrigeration Gd metal and Gd–Si–Ge alloys Active material in magnetic refrigeration prototypes; Curie temperature ~20 °C makes it ideal for room-temperature cooling research
Phosphors Gd2O2S:Tb (X-ray screens), GOS scintillators Medical X-ray imaging intensifying screens; CT detector ceramics

Important Notes

Export controls in force Gadolinium is one of the seven medium and heavy rare earths controlled under MOFCOM/GAC Announcement No. 18/2025 [2]. All forms — metal, oxide, alloys, compounds, and finished magnet rotors containing Gd — require Chinese export licences.
Healthcare supply implication MRI contrast agents are an FDA-approved drug class with multi-month qualification cycles. A meaningful Gd licensing slowdown would propagate into hospital imaging volumes within 6–12 months. The contrast-agent supply chain (Bayer Magnevist, GE Pharmaceuticals Omniscan, Bracco MultiHance) is critically dependent on Chinese Gd2O3.
Magnet additive substitution NdFeB manufacturers historically used Dy/Tb to boost coercivity at high temperature. Recent grain-boundary diffusion processes substitute Gd at lower cost. As Dy/Tb prices spiked under controls, Gd demand from this segment grew — tightening the Gd market simultaneously.
